Frequently Asked Questions:

  • NorthFork Advisors provides individuals and families with financial planning and investment management services. This means we can help you plan for future events, like retirement or the sale of a business, or navigate life’s surprises, like the death of a loved one, the end of a marriage, or the birth of a child or grandchild.

  • Our clients wear many hats, they are architects, doctors, landscapers, educators, therapists, builders, ski patrollers, non-profit leaders, natural resource professionals; they are also mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, grandparents; they are also elected officials, musicians, coaches, and volunteers. Some have just received an inheritance and others are building an estate plan that will exist well beyond their lifetime. We serve young professionals, seasoned professionals, and retirees, and we work directly with individuals, families, non-profits, and businesses.

Our clients come from many different walks of life, but they all have one thing in common: they want to put their portfolio to work on behalf of their own future while working toward a more sustainable, more equitable world.

  • Impact investing is a broad term that refers to investing with a goal beyond just financial returns. We like the term ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) investing because it is a bit more specific and better describes the type of impact investing we do. ESG investing is a strategy that considers a company's impact on the environment, its social responsibilities, and its governance practices to make business decisions. This approach aims to generate financial returns while promoting positive societal outcomes. For our clients, this approach means not only fostering long-term financial growth but also contributing to a more sustainable and equitable world.

  • As a registered investment advisor (a regulatory designation granted by securities regulators) we are a fiduciary. A fiduciary is a wealth advisor held to the highest standard of financial responsibility and who is legally obligated to act in the best interest of their clients. This standard, known as the fiduciary standard, is in contrast to the suitability standard, which only requires that an advisor make recommendations that are “suitable” for their clients.

  • Our fee structure starts at 1% of the assets we manage and decreases for amounts over $1 million. We work to keep our pricing fair, transparent, and easy to understand.

  • We are a “fee-only” advisor, which means that we are paid directly by our clients for the services we provide.

This means that we do not receive commissions or other financial incentives for any of the recommendations we make.

We choose to be a fee-only advisor (versus “fee-based,” which does allow for commissions and incentive payments) because it greatly reduces the potential conflicts of interest between an advisor and their clients.

  • You’ll work directly with the Principals and key decision-makers of our firm. We have a clear, transparent, and easy to understand fee structure. We go well beyond investment management and make financial planning part of every client relationship. We do ESG with integrity and use internally-built portfolios that we personally manage. Last but not least, you’ll work directly with Sarah Fitzgerald, Certified Financial Planner, and Wes Shifrin, Chartered Financial Analyst as we build a comprehensive wealth management strategy for you.

  • The first step is a complimentary discovery session that can be done in-person or over Zoom. During this meeting, we want to learn about your goals and aspirations and we can share a bit about how we might be able to support them. To schedule your discovery session, we invite you to connect with our team.

  • A commitment to people and our planet has been in our DNA from the very beginning. We are members of 1% for the Planet, we are a B Corp, and we serve on various nonprofit boards. Beyond these commitments, our company’s annual giving contributes to causes such as literacy, equitable access to healthcare, public trails and parks, domestic violence prevention, environmental sustainability, and free and independent journalism. We have also established relationships with representatives of all the funds that we work with and participate in quarterly updates on financial performance and fund impact.

  • A Benefit Corporation, or B-Corp, is a type of business that balances profit with purpose. Certified by the nonprofit B Lab, B-Corps meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. Unlike traditional corporations, which prioritize shareholder value, B-Corps are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment. You can view our B-corp profile here.
